Searching for Sasquatch

Q:  What do you get when you mix : a closed shop, 12 hairdressers, 54 bands, 32 degree weather, one RV, one all night Walmart, 8 cases of american beer, and the most beautiful concert venue on earth?

A:  The best weekend of our lives

On May 22nd the friendly stylists at lab closed down shop for the US memorial day weekend and set out across america (well washington state at least) to bear witness to the Sasquatch Music Festival located at the Gorge Amphitheater in the po-dunk, can't find it on the map, sneeze and you'll miss it town of George Washington. I'm sure the towns namesake would be rolling in his presidential grave if he lived to see the splendor that is one gas station and two liquor stores.  The Sasquatch festival boasts some of the best new talent and already risen stars of the now mainstream independent music scene. This convenient little party of about 40,000 was the backdrop for what turned out to be an epic adventure for the lab team.

Some highlights included :

-Vanessa instigating a "dance-off " with Ian at the over populated  Girl Talk  show.

-Justine's first ever shotgunned beer and subsequent spraying of that beer all over a stranger 5 feet away.

-Bon Iver's mind blowing performance at the wookie stage

-Matty clinging to the front stage barrier  to save himself from 10,000 screaming Gogol Bordello fans.

-Getting almost trampled to death at deadmau5, and then making fun of people who thought that they were there to see " the dead Mau five ".

-Dancing our collective asses off at Chromeo..................I said Chromeo !

-Sporting the warpaint to see Of Montreal.

- The couple caught having sex on the cliff during the Decemberists

- The devastation they called " Honey Buckets".............Kids that ain't honey!

And finally a big heart felt thanks to the Lee Market in Snoqualmie pass. We stopped here for coffee and munchies on the way back to civilization. We highly recommend stopping in there the next time you need; A) a bag of chicken, B) real ninja throwing stars, C) a touch sensitive mystical wizard lamp, D) vintage Ninja Turtle duo-tangs, or E) Patriotic memorabilia of almost any shape or size.

edge muh kay shun

May was education month at lab!  Many of our stylist travelled to other cities to participate in training with companies like Schwarzkopf professional and Suki's. However the biggest event was right here in the lab environment as we welcomed national platform artist and international educator Jean-Sebastien Lacombe!

On May 12th the lab closed it's doors for the day so that we could get serious about educating ourselves on the latest and greatest from Schwarzkopf's essential looks collection spring/summer 09.  Opting to use mannequin heads instead of their human (more likely to cry or complain) counterparts made for an afternoon of unbridled creativity and fun.

At  the end of the day we were met with high praise from our new friend "Jean-Seb" who not only loves lab, but has also fallen in love with our beautiful city. So we figured the only thing to do was take him out and show him the finer points of Victoria! Drinks on the roof top at Strathcona, sushi at Ebizo, coffee at Habit, more drinks at the Mint, and breakfast at Mole made for a perfect intro to the local culture.

Gimme Shelter

On May 7th the friendly stylists at lab closed the shop for a day to host the first ever GIMME SHELTER cut-a-thon to raise money for the "Our Place Society."

This worthy charity helps the homeless and working poor in the city of Victoria by providing shelter and necessary services to those in need. They are headed by the iconic Rev. Allan who is described as a hero by many, and we can see why.  Anytime you get a chance to help these fine folks out we suggest it. You will be met with genuine heartfelt gratitude and warmth.

The day was a huge success boasting almost 100 haircuts and raising approx $2500.

Thanks to our pals Chris Longshanks & Kenzie Clarke for supplying the soundtrack.

The sold out after party was held at Luckybar's newest incarnation NYPD (not your parents disco). Olmeca tequila was on hand to make sure that the party goers were all in great spirits and subsequently caused more than one stylist to be late for work the next day. We also had a chance to give away a truckload of prizes donated by our friends in the Lower Johnson district. Prizes such as the "lay back way back award" were given to the people furthest from the stage, the auspicious "I came with Paige award" ( given to the girl that came with Paige), and the most prestigious of all "Convince me you can hustle award" in which people had to merely convince Matty, in front of the bar, that they could do the hustle.

Congrats to our contest winners especially Chris Vickers ( winner of the "I dropped my pants to win this award" award. )

All in all a successful and fun filled day had by all.
